Italy is one of the most well known wine regions in the world, with a long and rich history; boasting more grape varietals than any other. It is here, in the heart of Puglia, Salento hosts Massseria Altemura (coming from the Italian word meaning self sufficient fortified farm). Between the Adriatic and Ionian Seas, this Maritime climatic area filled with limestone and clay allow darker varietal selections to flourish. Among which, is one of my favorites wines to date - Sasseo Primotivo. This lusciously deep red wine is tinged with hues of violet in that Old World sort of way, first giving a bouquet of tobacco and leather and secondarily dark fruit. The fruit quality is carried in to the mouth and becomes more prevalent as blueberry, blackberry, and stewed plums. The rich flavors are intensified by hints of chocolate and espresso, and a distinct mention of sweet herbs. This wines starts to drink best after about an hour of opening and pairs well grilled meats, and red sauces dishes, especially those prepared with fall crops.
