Spirit of the Month St. George Green Chile Vodka I have been an ardent admirer of St. George Distillery located in Alameda, California. St. George first opened in 1982 and has the distinction of being the first small distillery to open since Prohibition. They developed the very popular Hangar One Vodka and sold it to Proximo Spirits in 2010 so they can concentrate on expanding their line of boutique spirits. Today they make 3 styles of gin, the first domestic absinthe since the 1912 ban, single malt whiskeys and an agricole rum. St. George makes all their spirits in an aircraft hangar that was part of the now defunct Alameda Naval Air Station. St. George is highly regarded, winning numerous awards but continues to develop new and interesting spirits. A relatively new addition to the St. George line up is Green Chile Vodka made with California jalapeo, serrano, habanero, red and yellow bell peppers, cilantro and lime. Thats a lot of vegetables in your vodka! Sure its got some heat, but its not overpowering and has enough sweet and savory flavors so its not a one dimensional firebomb thats only function is in Bloody Marys. The first thing you notice about the vodka is the color. It has a lovely light green tinge to it. On the nose it smells like a vegetable and herb garden with the jalapeo being pronounced. In the mouth you get the spice and a tickle of the heat to remind you of all the peppers that went into this. Its a sneaky yet satisfying heat like enjoying a spicy salsa. Undoubtedly the Green Chile Vodka will be predominantly used in Bloody Marys and in place of Tequila in Margaritas. I actually like all the flavors by itself, on the rocks with a twist of lime. Its versatile enough to go in lots of cocktails and Im sure the creative bartenders at Seville can come up with some interesting recipes. One of my favorites is a spicy Paloma 2 oz. of St. George Green Chile Vodka, 2 oz. grapefruit juice, 2 oz. club soda, _ oz. lime juice and a tsp sugar. St. George Green Chile Vodka is currently available in the Palace Caf, End OThe Alley and you can purchase a bottle in the Wine Shoppe. Live a little, give this unique vodka a shot in your next cocktail.
