Elegant Gatsby-themed affair returned to roots of Mardi Gras with masquerade
It may be Olympics season in Sochi, Russia, but down here on the Gulf Coast, its all about Mardi Gras. And the Krewe of Seville let the good times roll Saturday night at its annual Mardi Gras ball. The Mardi Gras ball marks the highlight of the Mardi Gras season for the krewe, so its always a big, frolicking time. Unlike most krewes, the Krewe of Seville changes its Mardi Gras theme from year to year. This years theme was The Great Gatsby. And in keeping with that theme, the ball was a masquerade. We wanted to get back to the roots of Mardi Gras, ball chairwoman Sylvia Ammons said. In the past, weve been angels and devils. Weve been bikers. We wanted to have this ball be more of a true Mardi Gras ball, and a true Mardi Gras ball is a masked ball. Men wore tuxedos and women wore sparkling flapper gowns. Masks ranged from the simple Lone Ranger-style to elaborate visages with long noses and feathers.
The night was capped off with the naming of the krewes 2014 king and queen. All the members of the krewe vote on the king and queen, who serve for a year as the faces of the krewe. Once the votes were tallied Saturday night, Priscilla Brewer and Michael Wierzbicki were announced to loud cheers as this years king and queen. Wierzbicki joined the krewe in 2008 and served as its captain, a managerial role, for two years. Brewer has been a krewe member since 2005 and is currently the chairwoman for the krewes cookoff committee.
It means the world to me, Brewer said. This is just such a fabulous group of people who will be there for you through thick and thin. Im honored, but I certainly wasnt expecting it.
With more than 100 members, the Krewe of Seville is one of the biggest Mardi Gras krewes in Pensacola.
