Tenshen Wines
Bill Carlson, Seville Quarter
Tenshen is a new wine collaboration between a highly successful wine importer, Alex Guarachi and one of Californias hottest winemakers, Joey Tensley. Together they have come up with a white and red blend using primarily Rhone grape varietals grown in sun-drenched Santa Barbara California. They have simply named the wine Tenshen as this play on words is how tense a winemaker fells before harvest to make sure everything goes perfectly ensuring a super bottle of wine.
Winemakers love blending wines from different grape varietals as they feel truly artistic getting the blend just right. Wine lovers are gravitating more and more to blends instead of wines made from one grape. The blended wines are fascinating with their layers of flavors and complexity.
The 2014 Tenshen White Blend is a four grape blend of Viognier, Roussanne, Grenache Blanc with a bit of Chardonnay thrown in. The Wine Spectator recently published its annual Top 100 Wines for 2015 and this wine was bestowed the 29th best wine of the year. That is pretty impressive for a wine that we sell in the Wine Shop for $17.99. A juicy white with notes of white peaches and honeydew melon, this medium bodied wine is a great alternative for Chardonnay drinkers.
We first got the Tenshen Red in the shop six months ago and it sold out in a week and couldnt get more until the next vintage. So were very happy that the 2014 Tenshen Red Blend ($22.99) has just been released and there appears to be more supply this time. The red is a five grape blend of Syrah, Grenache, Mourvedre, Petit Sirah and Merlot, aged 10 months in oak. Its a pretty extracted dense wine that is packed with black fruits, bing cherries and a kick of white pepper on the finish. This wine is delicious now but will age gracefully for 5-10 years.
The Tenshen wines are great additions to the Seville Wine Shop. The wines are dynamite and the bottles stand out in their cutting edge black and white packaging. Everybody needs to experience a little Tenshen in their life!
