December 30, 2009 With the holiday festivities upon us, now is the time to choose your celebratory champagne or sparkling wine. One of lifes greatest pleasures is to hear the distinctive pop when opening the bottle and watch the dazzling array of tiny bubbles in the glass. The toasty aromas, effervescence and creamy texture are like no other beverage in the world. My pick for this years holiday bubbly is theGruet Blanc de Noir. Neither French nor California, but from New Mexico. Truth or Consequence New Mexico to be exact. Really! The French family Gruet (grew-AY) were making champagne in a small commune but were intrigued about making a champagne style wine in America. While all the famous champagne houses in France chose California, the Gruets stumbled upon New Mexico. The land was cheap and the 4300 elevated vineyards cooled down 30 during the night offering a contrast to the relentless heat and sunshine. This combination prolonged the growing season and produced ripe pinot noir and chardonnay perfect for their cuvee. The Gruet Blanc de Noir is a pinot noir dominated sparkling wine, full-bodied in style with notes of fresh baked biscuits and dark cherries. Great by itself, but rich enough to go with a wide range of food. Seville Quarter will be pouring this superb sparkler during its New Years Eve Dinner paired with coconut crusted diver scallops with hazelnut burre blanc. The Gruet Blanc de Noir recently won the prestigious Gold Medal a few months ago at the 21st AnnualWSREWine and Food Classic. This is a sparkling wine you can load up on and not break your holiday budget as we are featuring it in our Wine Shoppe for $14.99. Feliz Navidad from New Mexico. Bill Carlson Seville Quarter
